Hi guys, we'd like to tell you about this exciting project in Ethiopia called Girl Power Skate Club. It was created by an organization we already told you about: The Ethiopian Skateboard Park project, "a children's development project group devoted to the development of co-educational learning facilities for street children in Ethiopia built around skateboarding", consisting of "a school built around a skateboard park that provides daily English, IT, General trade, Art, Music and Skateboarding classes".
About the Girl Power Skate Club, team member Wosene Haile says: It is "an exciting new addition to the SKATEWORKS Outreach program in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. A program concentrating on the motivational needs of young girls and using the aspirational and confidence building aspects of Skateboarding. Girlpower skate club is headed up by myself, Wosene Haile and I am an Ethiopian woman living in Addis Ababa. Every week we run regular skate clinics throughout the different areas of Addis Ababa. Some of the distinct areas I like to concentrateon is shyness and general confidance. Girls doing sport in Ethiopia has a longhistory and especially in running as we have just seen in the London Olympics, but apart from that they take a supportive role in the home as they grow up andmature in readiness for the work force and marriage. A young girl's upbringing is centered around the home with many duties of Coffee making, going out to buy bread for breakfast in the early morning and houshold chores. The boys do not get off scott free by any means but most of the domestic tasks fall upon the girls.
GIRL POWER SKATE CLUB concentrates on motivating young women and encouraging them to try new things and stretch them selves to their full potential, Girl Power."
The same organization also publishes the first skate magazine in Eastern Africa (see below for free download). Find them at ethiopianskateparkproject.blogspot.com and check their profile on afropunk.com.
