iam editorial from blackattitude mag balances unbridled masculinity and vulnerability

November 29, 2016

Prisca M. Monnier has an eye for detail and a mind for concepts that break the mold. From the mouth of the photographer herself, “The vision is to combine the traditional with the modern, about being Black and living one’s truth regardless of what’s expected of Black people by others (black and non-black), even if it seems paradoxical to some.” In this editorial, kinky hair is coupled with dulled metals, deep molasses skin is enveloped in light-washed linen, and colorful wool is draped along the broad chest of model Abdoulaye Barry. There are so many layers to this concept, the expression and range of colors, textures, and fabrics make for such a rich landscape in each portrait. With rustic, almost-ancient inspired styling by Catia Mota Da Cruz, Barry taps into the unbridled masculinity found in medieval and Shakespearean Europe, while balancing the softness and vulnerability of Monnier’s lens. This editorial is a stunning display of juxtaposition in expression, it’s about being free, living one’s truth in the open. Enjoy the full editorial below.
