interview: dj-photographer superduper brick is the definition of a dream chaser

“Oh my god, there he is…there’s Brick”, a tiny curly-haired tween squeals to her friends as they all huddle together to point and whisper. I’m sitting on the steps of the stage at SOBs and watching the meet-and-greet for the national tour that Brick is DJing for. I look over to see Brick with his arms draped around two fans, all three of them are straight up beaming. At first glance, Brick looks like he walked straight out of your favorite 90s movie or cartoon. My immediate thoughts went to Gerald from Hey Arnold! but when I show my friends they call it more of a House Party vibe. Upon further research and conversation with Brick, I realize that he’s not going for any specific look nor is trying to pay homage to any particular time period – he’s just being himself. At the moment, Brick is on the road DJing for KYLE’s King Wavy Tour. However, DJing is only a blip on the list of talents that the 18 year old, Cali-bred artist has. Don’t get me wrong, his musical talents are killer, but he’s also a beast behind the camera.

This past year he directed the video for Kehlani and KYLE’s single “Just a Picture”. But in my opinion, photography is young Brick’s bread and butter. The kid is the king of creative concepts and his eye for color schemes and interesting angles is beyond sharp. Aside from his plethora of creative talents, the workings of Brick’s mind is honestly his most enchanting quality. He’s definitely wise beyond his years. When I first met him I was shocked at the fact that he was only 18 years old. In fact, the only giveaway to his age was the blank look on his face when I made a Martin reference and then later on in the evening when he revealed to me that the first song that made him fall in love with Hip Hop was “21 Questions” by 50 Cent.

As we delved deeper into our conversation, I was impressed by Brick’s attitude. As an artist on the come up in the entertainment world, he is well aware of the power that he holds within.
When I ask him what title he would give himself if he could pick one, his response is refreshing.
“I don’t like to label myself. I just do what makes me feel good. I just want to encourage people to do what makes them feel like this,” he says as he starts smiling and dancing.
It’s not surprising that his positive attitude and strong work ethic has already caught the attention of other stand out artists such as Chance the Rapper, Overdoz, Kehlani, G-Eazy and more. It’s very clear that the trail that he’s blazing for himself is sure to be a long and prosperous one. Before Brick went on to perform at SOBs, we took a quick stroll outside to talk more in-depth about Brick’s style, pursuing his passions and why he doesn’t give a fuck about what anyone else thinks.
