AFROPUNK AFTER DARK EVENT SERIES WILL INCLUDE POETRY WITH NIKKI GIOVANNI HOSTED BY SAUL WILLIAMS, COMEDY WITH 2 DOPE QUEENS, A SALON WITH MICHAELA ANGELA DAVIS AND MUCH MORE

The 2016 Brooklyn AFROPUNK Festival, whose lineup includes Ice Cube, TV On The Radio, Tyler The Creator, Flying Lotus,The Internet, Laura Mvula, Skunk & Anansie and Janelle Monae, among many more has announced a series of events for AFROPUNK After Dark. AFROPUNK After Dark is the immediate afterparty for the Brooklyn festival where the party creeps into the streets of Brooklyn with an array of activities like DJ sets, poetry slams, comedy shows and film screenings. This year’s series includes a night of poetry with Nikki Giovanni and Saul Williams, a taping of the highly rated podcast 2 Dope Queens, afterparty with Soulection, DJ sets by GZA, DJ Premier, founder of Black Girls Rock Beverly Bond, and so much more (see below for all AFROPUNK AFTERDARK events).

This year also brings Art and Times where festival goers will be able to view and interact with a one-of-a-kind art happening. Original work created in conjunction with the first artist-run super PAC For Freedoms, who are using art to inspire deeper political engagement for citizens who want to have a greater impact on the American political landscape. Founded by Hank Willis Thomas & Eric Gottesman, it encourages new forms of critical discourse surrounding the upcoming 2016 presidential election. Their medium is American democracy with a mission to support the efforts to reshape it into a more transparent and representative form. Featured artist in this unique, open-air gallery lining the perimeter fencing of Commodore Barry Park include Coby Kennedy, Jackie Nickerson, and Rashid Johnson.

Other must see installations include Activism Row’s Carnival of Consciousness powered by the Aids Healthcare Foundation featuring grassroots and nonprofit organizations that work to solve urgent community problem.

Fans can keep tabs on the activities surrounding AFROPUNK BROOKLYN by downloading the AFROPUNK app from the Apple and Google Play stores. The app will is available today, August 17th and the only place to find the festival schedule stage times and keep abreast of festival activities.

AFROPUNK BROOKLYN could not be possible without the support of our partners. One activation festival-goers should definitely visit is the Toyota Music Renegade Record Lab. Located off the Green Stage, the Toyota Music Renegade Record Lab provides festival-goers with an array of interactive vehicle and music-inspired activities. From the UpCycle Record Lab, where attendees can create custom records featuring tracks from their favorite Afropunk performers to striking a pose in their best festival-gear inside the Camry Video Booth, these two activities are just a small taste of the big things going down in the Toyota Music tent.

Additionally, through a partnership with Facebook and NTS Radio, AFROPUNK will go behind the scenes for artist interviews via Facebook Live. By checking the AFROPUNK Facebook page, fans can check out this content during both days of AFROPUNK BROOKLYN.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 25TH

2 Dope Queens – Brooklyn Bowl – 61 Wythe Ave: Comedy Show Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams, along with their favorite comedians, share stories about sex, romance, race, hair journeys, living in New York, and Billy Joel plus a whole bunch of other topics.

#BreakTheCycle – The Kymberle Project – 1332 Atlantic Avenue Party goers are invited to browse thought provoking art and talk to one another. The evening will conclude with a screening of The Cycle, a short film that looks at the cycle of police violence and fear in the Black community and followed by a brief conversation with executive producer Sway Calloway and film cast members.
