jordan peele and misha green to co-produce hbo adaptation of jim crow-era road trip novel ‘lovecraft country’
Get Out writer-director Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions is teaming with Underground executive producer/showrunner Misha Green, J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros Television for a TV adaptation of Lovecraft Country, the bestselling 2016 novel by Matt Ruff. The book is set in the 1950s and tells the story of Atticus Black, who embarks on a road trip across Jim Crow America with his Uncle George and friend Letitia to find his father after he goes missing, facing malevolent spirits along the way. Following the record breaking Get Out, the series is yet another attempt to reclaim the horror genre for Black audiences and storytellers.
Lovecraft Country will be a one-hour drama and has been given a straight-to-series order by HBO. The pilot will be written by Peele who will also be executive producer along with Green, Abrams and Ben Stephenson. In addition, Green will be the showrunner for the series.
“When I first read Lovecraft Country I knew it had the potential to be unlike anything else on television,” Green told Deadline. “Jordan, JJ, Bad Robot, Warner Bros and HBO are all in the business of pushing the limits when it comes to storytelling, and I am beyond thrilled to be working with them on this project.”
