AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

Kelis is releasing an album this summer and doing the usual press tour to spread the word. She even made time to stop by MTV and example/justify her fashion through the years. Some of the looks even she had to laugh at but still managed to make a great point, you will never have regrets if you wear what feels good at the time. And if skin tight pink spandex catsuits with liberty spike head piece holding on rat tail that reaches your ankles feels good, bitch do it!

Kelis: The Transformation Queen
Words Iyana Gregory

Watching the interview made me of course want to look back at some of the crazy things Kelis has worn in the past and see if i could update them to wear today. Some of her looks were so fresh and some so bad, it is crazy to see how she spanned the gamut.

Cruella the Czar

Remember when everyone was wearing these big ass hats!? Well Kelis did it first and in a big way! Even getting PETA's attention. Not to be left out of this creation are the faux leather leggings it seemed like you couldn't get away from. Here is a update on this look.

Club Queen

NY residents will remember the days of the Misshapes dance party. Never one to be left out of a party Kelis would frequent this night breaking new fashion ground weekly. One of my fav outfits from her during this time was this vintage wrap dress sexed up with peek-a-boo bra and night shades. Here is a update on this look

Daddy's Skater Girl

Early Kelis before the money and the fame and milkshake is my favorite by far! NERD had just entered the room and brought this crazy cool chick with them. Here is a look that captured her at this time. Vintage T, back when the concept was still new, and her signature larger than life fro. Here is an update on this look.

Then, now and forever Kelis is an Afro-punk diva!

Another thing to add in reference to folks freakin' out then biting her style: it's supposed to happen that way. My theory is that whe a norm is established, those who break that common pattern are rejected because the routine presents a sense of comfort and security from expectation and a change is disorienting. Insecurity makes folks react but their egos do not allow them aknowledge the respect and envy they hold for one who establishes their own routine and personal security.

Kelis is secure in herself and goes with her flow, not the flow like the masses.

Longtime Kelis fan, 'Glow' is probably my favorite track of hers.

She is right that style and clothing represent your first impression or 'resume'. And she has a great, varied, creative resume.

As a vegan / vegetarian I have something to say to PETA: step the fuck off and leave Kelis alone! I DO NOT support the abuse or mistreament of animals. But I do support others rights to choices. I wear leather shoes amongst other animal made products but I don't wear fur but if you want to, so be it. And leave Mike Vick alone too PETA, y'all care more about dogs than you do starving children across the street you, let me chill...

Do you Kelis and I'm glad you express yourself artisticly with complete freedom. But take it easy on my man Nas' pockets baby, $50G's a month? Come on, hahahahaa...

i'm a Kelis fan and i like how even though her styles change she still stays true to herself and is able 2 stand out even in an industry where originality is made of fun of. my fav look was the signature 'fro i had one that was the baby version of hers freshmen year of college. now that i've changed my own look its kinda cool 2 see the "trendy chicks" doing the look now even though Kelis made that look her own YEARS ago.
