AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

Not one to steer clear of controversy, M.I.A. just released a very graphic video for single 'Born Free'. Helmed by French director Romain Gavras, the nine-minute mini movie is about the fight for freedom and takes us to a world where redheads are targeted by the government. Some even argue that having caucasians as the targets brings home the message to even more people. So, is the violence getting her point across or distracting from it? Check out the video below and tell us what you think.

yeah yeah
war is bad
hatred is wrong
racism is ugly...

still violence is beautiful
with the right light
and the right sound track
Isn't it?

Another good job done by director Romain Gavras. Too bad though that, just like Justice with "Stress", M.I.A.'s song here remains quite average...

M.I.A is definitely no stranger to 3rd world war issues so the video does hit home for her in more ways than it wud for someone who grew up in the american hood or suburbs. i think she gets her point across yet its got a full scale of artistic value that's being played out to the point where u may not understand the full dynamic of the video if u cant get a clue abt civilization as a whole all ovr the world. i found it a bit difficult to hear all the words to the song but i still get the point.

I like it because M.I.A. wether you know it or not proves her point artistically and lyrically unlike others...because she has lived that. Her background is why most of us discuss our views on this website and we live that proof. You should look up her background to see what I mean.

all i really heard was the chorus, "Born Free." everything else was up-staged by the video. its funny that a French director chose to use american troops as if france is innocent...

I have to admit this song is starting to grow on me. Lyrically and conceptually it's pretty close to the top of her best.

It still isn't messing with this joint though:

anything to stir up controversy. THe more controversial, the more popularity. Even if it is meaningless.
The music, If anyone was even listening, sounds like a a rip off of so many different bands, like the HeartsRevolution definetly. Check out their song CYAO, and Ultraviolence. The elements are definetly apparent in this video. SO unoriginal, I doubt shes even from Sri Lanka. Shes so from London. Shes just tryna get you guys with her Romain Gavras violence vid. a bunch of people shooting. WHy do you think shes chose him anyway? Why couldn't she direct her own video! HeartRev rip ooooofffff!
