AFROPUNK

... the other Black experience

Today is the first day i've wore my hair natural at work. It's early so there aren't many people here yet. But already i'm starting to get looks. Most of which are people just staring at my hair trying to figure it out. Their faces are so funny. Kinda like they're thinking really hard on the toliet. Haha but anywho they don't say anything about it, just stare. I guess they're so use to me with permed staighten hair. I've been off of perms for about 10 months now but i would still flat iron it straight. This is the first time i've worn it completely natural! I even have a little bow in it to accent the coils, compliments of my little sister. She by the way loved it, as well as my mother! I've gotten a lot of compliments from my family! I kinda knew I would get a different reaction from others. It's a big change so I had to get ready for it. I just kept telling myself, this morning as I was getting ready for work, that confidence is key! I could pull this off if I knew inside that I looked damn good! I feel so beautiful despite the awkward looks. :) So that's all. I just needed to put this experience down in words. I feel so liberated and proud and just wanted to share how I was feeling with whoever finds this. Wish me luck, here I go! :D ...

That's true! I guess I kinda felt like a kid with a new toy and wanting everyone to notice it. lol You're right! I got a lot of positive responses. Thanks Deacon! :)

FABULOUS! When you do things for you and don't make a big deal out of it, few others will also. Folks end up respecting you and your courage (openly and quietly) because they simply wish to do the same.

Haha Thanks Jahluv! Yeah I definately freaked a lot of people out! But surprisingly they're getting used to it! I thought about shaving my head a couple of times but that in itself will be another adventure for me. I'm not sure if I have the balls to pull it off but i might someday! I've always admired women who had the confidence to do that! I'm kinda lacking that a bit...plus i think i have a funny shaped head! :P

Aww Thank you so much Asha Barbie! I love hearing other people's stories! You look so beautiful in your profile pic! I love your hair! Yeah i got sick of the relaxers too! They were damaging my hair and scalp so much, i just need to quit it. All those chemical burns and breakage just to try to fit in to what society looked like around me!...That's no good, and I finally figured that out! It took a while but I did it! Thanks for sharing your story! :)

My senior year of high school i took a pair of clippers to my head because i was tired of my relaxer. Going from collar bone length relaxed hair to a caesar gave me surprising reactions! i must say it always warms my heart to see natural women (as corny as that sounds!) good luck Hunni!!

Thank you so much CocoaPuss Zine. Yeah I think you're right. I'm probably digging too much in it. Almost as if i'm defending how my hair is before listening to what others think about it. And besides it's not about what they think about it, it's about how I feel. And I do feel beautiful. :) Yes, the first day was so hard! But it was a good one. Thanks everyone for the love. I really need this! :)

people with relaxers are probably not going to compliment you on your hair, maybe you shouldn't ask their opinion on it especially if you are in a good mood already. i think white people and other non black people probably really do like your hair the way you have it right now. they're just complimenting your different style and probably don't know how much thought you are really putting into it. i think they like more "ethnic looks" or curly styles better. if your hair is straight it's pretty much like theirs so they could easily ignore it. but maybe they saw "good hair" and really are trying to make an effort to know more about black hair. the first day is always the hardest i think. it gets easier. pretty soon you won't even think about it anymore. i'm sure you look beautiful wendy.
