new music: adaku puts her heart and soul into debut album ‘plasma’

May 6, 2014

Originally from Rivers State, Nigeria, D.C.-based singer/songwriter/guitarist Adaku put her heart and soul into her highly anticipated debut album Plasma. Known for her popular YouTube videos covering songs such as “Grenade” by Bruno Mars (which has gained well over 100,000 views), Adaku has caught the attention of music lovers of all genres.

Each track effortlessly flows into one other, strategically painting an on-going story of love and life to her listeners; the good, the bad and the in-between. Immediately after I pressed play I was blown away by Adaku’s impressive vocal range. Plasma is soulful, unique, honest and eclectic. It incorporates neo soul, jazz, techno, reggae and folk influences. Genre bending beats and heartfelt lyrics accounting past relationships melodically tie the album together. Giving off good vibes from start to finish Plasma reminded me of music by Corinne Bailey Rae with a hint of Solange Knowles’ carefree yet edgy realness. Songs such as “Or You Can” and “Burn Blue” highlighted her originality with the help of relatable, yet poetically executed lyrics.

Plasma is available for purchase on iTunes
