new music: black orchids’ debut ep showcases a raw talent for powerful hooks #soundcheck

July 21, 2016

Simultaneously stripped down, ethereal, and aggressive, Black Orchids’ debut EP showcases a raw talent for powerful hooks. The 3 song EP showcases the vocal work of frontwoman Kay Elizabeth. Soaked in reverb, her voice towers over the psychedelic hard rock. On title track “Blood Moon,” the band makes the most of the interplay between baritone and bass guitars, for a heavy almost doom metal low end. The EP frequently hits those transcendent larger than life moments, nowhere better than on the chorus to “Obscure Vision,” where Kay Elizabeth’s voice echoes off the walls like an abandoned amphitheater. The EP is out now, and available through the band’s Bandcamp page.
