new music: blitz the ambassador issues a rallying cry on ‘diasporadical’ #soundcheck

February 6, 2017

“From Joburg to Ferguson it’s all the same system,” Blitz the Ambassador spits on “Heaven,” lyrically tying together the international struggles for justice the same way he ties together diasporic sounds on Diasporadical. Highlife, Afrobeat, hip-hop, jazz, dub, and the odd touch of soul collide on the album, while Blitz and his impressive crew of guests name check Lee Scratch Perry, Lauryn Hill, Kwame Nkrumah, Steve Biko, Fela, and in my favorite line of the record “Audre Lorde of the Rings.” The album is a rallying cry to all people of the African diaspora to unite against oppression. Lines like “wake up” and “rise up” pop up on nearly every song, particularly on the immaculately produced “A(Wake).” As Blitz and Patrice sing, a record like this has been a “Long Time Coming.”
