new music: funk supergroup big ol’ nasty getdown returns with “mantra” #soundcheck

May 16, 2016

At this point it’s just a matter of time before Kendra Foster gets her breakout moment, when just about every track she appears on is pure gold. The singer has been a consistent highlight of her collaborations with D’Angelo and Parliament/Funkadelic. Now she’s back fronting a track by the funk collective known as the Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown (acronym still being claimed as unintentional). With a verse by Arrested Developmennt’s Speech, guitar from Tori Ruffin of The Time, and the inimitable bassery of Fishbone’s Norwood Fisher, the track is a deep groove whose biggest fault is fading out instead of keeping the party going another minute or so. Kendra’s vocals steal the spotlight, her passion and message demanding your ears’ attention. The cut is the first from B.O.N.G.’s forthcoming Volume 2, which will feature contributions from the great Vernon Reid, Larry Dunn (Earth Wind & Fire), Leon Mobley, and many more.
