new music: royal shines on their debut ep #soundcheck

July 8, 2015

Crammed into the Basement EAV two weeks ago, we got our first taste of ROYAL’s electrifying live set. The band tore through cuts from their ROYAL REMIXES tape, and introduced the dopeness contained on their proper debut EP. Fortunately for everyone not in the room that night, the chemistry between Dead Prez DJ mikeflo and ATL icon Devon Lee carries over to their ROYAL EP.

Cuts like “CRASH” establish the group’s format: a mix of classic rock, hip-hop, house, and soul. It’s a potent mix, that they find surprising variation inside. “Jump” is destined for the club, where “Grey” indulges in Devon Lee’s stated love for Pink Floyd, exploring every inch of ambiance in his washed out guitar. Yet both feel of a piece; cut from the same omni-genre cloth. Devon Lee’s soulful rasp balances well against mikeflo’s lean flow.
