new music: south londoner jorja smith appears from thin air, releases killer first song

January 20, 2016

I’m not totally convinced Jorja Smith didn’t manifest out of thin air. The 18-year-old singer/songwriter lives in South London, where she works at a Starbucks, and, apparently, writes and records very strong first singles. ‘Blue Lights’ is a soulful kick-back vibe of a song (thanks to a Dizzee Rascal’s ‘Sirens’ sample) with super-smart lyrical observations about certain dynamics in her hometown—namely, how everyday young people view the authority and the police and how we think they view us. “Back home in Walsall is where I started writing, and this song is influenced by what I grew up around,” Smith told Pigeons and Planes.

Check out ‘Blue Lights’ and keep an eye out for this up-and-comer.
