new music: the london souls’ ‘here come the girls’ is a feast of retro rock #soundcheck

April 15, 2015

There’s a beautiful symmetry to The London Souls. A new Brooklyn based band that draws influence from vintage soul and classic rock, named for the UK R&B bands of the late 60’s and 70’s that drew from American soul. Everything comes full circle. On their latest Here Come the Girls, out now on the band’s bandcamp, the band matches their classic songcraft with retro charm and an indie rock vibe.

From the jangle-pop of opener “When I’m With You,” to the Ray Charles quoting “Honey” to the skiffle of “How Can I Get Through,” Tash and Chris are faithful students of 60’s rock and soul. While their songs are anchored in a specific time and space, on songs like the beautiful closing track “Run Zombie Run,” and the minimal “Hercules,” they marry their retro influences with an au courant energy.  Ultimately, The London Soul’s record is more than just a sum of their influences. Here Come the Girls backs up their style with some serious songwriting muscle. Though the sounds may nod to the 60’s, the songs themselves are timeless.
