op-ed: my journey as an indie young black female sci-fi filmmaker

July 21, 2016

Some of the films I love include, The Green Mile, Equilibrium, The Matrix, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Photographing Fairies and TV series, In The Flesh.

These films are very different in their own right. However, what has always inspired me with the intelligent, Fantasy/Scifi/Horror genre, is the use of current/past issues within society and creating a brand new environment/setting to tell the story. It’s akin to the grotesque in fairy tales, which I believe most have read or watched at least one, i.e Snow White and Cinderella. When I identified, the common themes, such as Discrimination, Sexism, Racism, Poverty and Religion, told with such imagination. I knew I wanted to create and tell my stories through this medium and genre.

Since shooting my first short film back in 2014 and my second in February this year. I plan to shoot my first mini Supernatural/Scifi web series, The Dark Side as my third piece. I’ve always had an interest in writing in episodic format, including scriptwriting for games. Writing The Dark Side posed a great opportunity to do this. After this I’ll continue to write and develop my first feature, which is a Scifi/Horror thriller.

The journey so far:

I’ve been asked many times, how I’m finding the process. A question mainly geared towards my gender and ethnicity. Obviously there will be many challenges ahead. Although, I’m not sure, I can say I have struggled any less or any more at this point. But I’m excited that many female Writer/Directors, including women of colour, have started to push through in leaps and bounds. A trend, I hope will follow through to indie and big budget genre films.
