photography: “i got tired, tired of not having any black references in brazilian media” – afro-brazilian photographer larissa isis

August 14, 2015

Explore the photography of Larissa Isis – an Afro-Brazilian photographer from Sao Jose dos Campos, outside of São Paolo. Isis’s passion for photography began early (inspired by the images her father would snap) and her focus is centered on photographing Black people. She tells us: “In August during a trip to New York City, I attended AFROPUNK and I was inspired the representation of black people in NYC!!! When I came back to Brazil I realized just how biased our media is, how absent black Brazilians are in movies, novellas, advertising, etc (as if we don’t use the same products!). Any of our references to black people in Brazil (fashion, style and film) are usually African-Americans, even amongst us black-Brazilians. I got tired, tired of not having any black references in Brazilian media, so I’m creating my own!”. Check out her work below.
