rad creative of the day: indigenous post-punk metal band dispossessed rages against colonial oppression in vicious ‘insurgency’ ep

July 19, 2016

Dispossessed are an indigenous metal band from Australia that’s serving up a no-holds barred, socially conscious dose of activism and postcolonial theory. To be blunt, their shit is hardcore. Intense from the jump, their EP ‘Insurgency’ is not for the faint of heart. Like tension released from the Earth’s core, by-way-of volcano, ‘Insurgency’ is an unapologetically explosion of Aboriginal anger. Musically, the trio combines a highly energetic mix of shoegaze, industrial, post-punk and metal. Content wise, Dispossessed challenges the imperialistic practices that continue to marginalize the ingenious people of Australia and the ways in which those practices still affect the cultural identity and heritage of their people. In all caps, the band’s manifesto begins: “WE ARE THE SURVIVORS OF GENOCIDE ACROSS TIME SPIRITUAL WARRIORS. OUR SOVEREIGNTY IS IRREFUTABLE, OUR HUMANITY DENIED.” Heavy stuff.

“As a collective of disenfranchised peoples of different identities and orientations disgusted with the zeitgeist of society, the illusion of where progress is leading and the apathy of our surroundings. Our enemy is the colonial, white supremacist, capitalist, cis-heteropatriarchy framework that we are all dispossessed in some way shape or form,” the band says, reported by VIBE.
