rad creative of the day: martinique-born director yannis sainte-rose shows impressive range with unique portfolio

August 1, 2016

Shout out to today’s RAD CREATIVE, filmmaker Yannis Sainte-Rose. Starting early, the Martinique-born creative received his first camera at the age of 6 and his first video camera by 10. An Advertising School alum, Sainte-Rose has solidified himself as a video and art director, of sorts, who has shot many music videos, worked on ads, editorials, and more. And though much of his portfolio is music video-centric, Sainte-Rose is shifting gears into the world of documentary. While on a trip to Haiti, last year, with non-profit development aid project Jahaïr, Sainte-Rose was exposed to the unique lifestyle challenges that local Haitians face and was moved to document their stories in his film “Chimen Lanmou”. “I like to provoke emotions and questioning. More than creating “beautiful images”, as subjective as this notion is, I would like to tell myself that it is possible to deliver a message and question the viewer, just the time of a video or even longer when we exceed the expectations,“ Sainte-Rose tells AFROPUNK. “I firmly believe in a Caribbean Cinema. Cinema is a mirror of society, so our films must reflect us. Caribbean Cinema can exist on its own: we have specific sceneries, people and stories. If it is not influenced by international criteria, it can be a cinema with its own flavor. I want to use my energy in the following years to develop this imagery.”

Check out several of Sainte-Rose’s visuals and a teaser trailer for “Chimen Lanmou”, below.
