The Zinn Education Project has launched an effort to get schools and communities to change Columbus day to Indigenous Peoples Day. We all know that Christopher Columbus was a racist, xenophobic murderous colonizer, but that has stopped the United States from celebrating his conquest with a day of his very own. Meanwhile in North Dakota, Indigenous people and allies are attempting to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline, on land that would still be theirs had Christopher Columbus had respected their humanity. In a press release, ZEP said, “It is time to stop celebrating the crimes of Columbus and stand in solidarity with the Indigenous people who demand an end to Columbus Day.
