tattoo of the week: a comic book marvel

September 22, 2010
It’s shiny. It’s oily. Yummm, the smell of a fresh tattoo, all petroleum jellied out announcing it’s newness and permanence. This week we had to feature the new tattoo from Mitchell Douglas, who recently got the comic book character, Luke Cage of Marvel on his upper arm with plans to develop it into a full sleeve. Mitchell said he got the Marvel character because his admiration of comics ability to stretch his imagination. This week, Mitchell, we feature you for our love of comics and straight up action heros. Don’t forget to e-mail pictures of your tattoos to whitney@afropunk.com to be featured as our tattoo of week.

My latest, a close up of Marvel character Luke Cage, is part of an ongoing project that will evolve into a half sleeve. In the coming weeks, the Black Panther and the Falcon will be added to make one piece of art connected to the Avengers logo that was my first tattoo.

When and where did you get it?
Artistic Skin Designs Inc. (the west side location) in Indianapolis. It’s less than a week old.

What does it mean to you?

As an artist, I believe comic books were an early influence on teaching me the power of imagination. That love of comics started with Marvel in the first grade (thanks to a cool lunchbox from moms) and the Avengers especially. I wanted my half sleeve to be a celebration of the black heroes that have been my favorites over the years (who just happen to be Avengers) and a symbol of the strength of black manhood.

How old were you when you got your first tattoo?

Admittedly, I’m late to the game. I got my first ink last year (the Avengers logo). It took years for me to settle on a design, and once I had it, I ran with it. The Avengers A is also a nod to my poetry group, the Affrilachian Poets.

Why should we feature your tattoo?

The design is bold and a true work of art. You don’t have to be a Marvel fan to appreciate the work.

Do you have a particular tattoo artist you go to?

Monte at Artistic Skin Designs Inc. on the west side of Indy. He’s a genius. His work has been featured in Tattoo magazine several times. Dude even tattooed Dimebag Darrell at Ozzfest. His accoplishe
