upcoming sly stone documentary features bobby womack, cornel west and many more

December 1, 2016

A new documentary on legendary funk and soul trailblazer Sly Stone is coming to Slamdance Festival in January! Best known as the lead singer and producer for Sly and the Family Stone, Sly is often credited for helping to usher in the creative and sonic content that would come to characterize funk, rock, R&B, soul, and psychedelia. On Sly’s impact, Cornel West says that he wouldn’t be who he is without the song ‘Everyday People,’ originally released in 1968 on the album “Stand!”. West says, “Sly created a music that became a place where we could go and have a foretaste of that freedom, of that democratic experience, even though we couldn’t live it on the ground.” Long time collaborator and peer Bobby Womack said of their work and his legacy, “We’re not all that important, you’re not all that important. I’m just talking about you ‘cause they paid me,” laughing at himself and thought of them being any less than legends. It’s clear that his place in music history is cemented, and it’s even more crystal that this documentary is going to show a side of the great that many haven’t seen. To support the film, go to the Slamdance Festival website, and make your way to Park City, Utah in January!
