video premiere: rat habitat – daddy issues

January 16, 2015

Today we’re premiering ‘Daddy Issues’, the latest video from Brooklyn-based Electro/Soul/Indie Rock duo Rat Habitat.
Rat Habitat is the brainchild of singer/flutist Melanie Charles (aka D’flower) and guitarist/producer Jordan Peters (aka Commissioner Wallace).
‘Daddy Issues’ video director Ohene Cornelius tells us: “I’ve seen Melanie Charles perform many times (solo/band/electric/acoustic) and it wasn’t until I heard ‘Daddy Issues’ performed stripped down live with just her a voice loop box and Jordan Peters on Guitar at Rockwood Music Hall at this intimate show that I realized how deep her well of emotion had actually gone. I was smitten by the lyrics and performance and decided the first Music Video I would direct would be for this song. The content of this song is one that connects so deeply with the experience of young women who have either lost their father figure through break up or death. Just the term “Daddy Issues” is universal. I come from a heavy performance art background and thought Melanie should definitely try acting in this vision that she didn’t know I was forming in my creative frontal lobe. I listened to the song 150 times and thought “what would her father want to see? What would an audience who’s never seen Melanie or heard Rat Habitat want to feel from their first encounter with greatness?”. With her trust I got to her core. And with the help of friends, like Dancer “Rue Brown” Poet “Joi Sanchez” Singer “Starr Busby” and BROOKLYN we made a piece of art that can reach out fathers on earth and in heaven.”
