... the other Black experience

Voices from the community: being a Black woman in the punk scene

Voices from the community:
This video piece is about being a Black woman in the punk scene.
It features AP member Symphony, among others, and members of band Ninjasonik (they're playing the 2012 Afropunk Festival by the way!).
We would like to know: what has been your experience as a Black woman in the punk scene?

Doshtrhillenhyd- Cool, i did not know that about the band 'Death' but i do know that rock n roll, which gave birth to punk-was started by blacks and Jimmy Hendrix also was an influence on metal, as well. Hell, we invented the first guitar, which was/is the Banjo, which so happens to be the instrumental foundation for country music, and country came by way of blues, and even rock n roll (Not to be mistaken for folk music, and even that was influenced).

I got so angry last night when on swedish tv they said that ramones invented punk !! for the f irst that band has simple and unevolved retarded melodys so i guess thats why many white men like them. But the band who invented punk was The band with Halfblack and black members called DEATH! they made their first song in 1971

and ramones did theirs in 1976 !! ENOUGH !! you paraswhites claim our inventions as yours. And why do people belive it? because whites own the media. Im thankfull for alternative media. Its the only way of bringing real news to the table.

No one understood me growing up. I would get on the bus and people would call me the weird black girl.

Personally in my teen years i was into SKA and punk rock. most black kids did not understand me. I would go to shows like 3 times a months. Its all about music.

It's almost like some black kids are scared to try punk music because of what they were raised to believe. Most black kids aren't raised on rock/punk at all

This is what I said when the pic was posted on facebook: "when I'm raving at a punk concert, a TON of Caucasians come up to me and want to be my best friend lol"

I made that comment for when I go to Austin for concerts. I'm from Houston and it's not as bad as it was before when it comes to being black and in the punk scene. But when I go to Austin, it's a totally different story. It's not diverse there at all. Long story short, there's usually just a sprinkle of blacks where I go. I know there are more of us out there, I just wish we'd show our faces more.

She's right when she says geography plays a part. Being in the Midwest ,  alot of people get shocked when they see someone black , especially female , at a show.

It's also very interesting being a black chick 'Skin' as well, see that is even more rare!
