... the other Black experience

AP Fam, skin-bleaching, beauty standards, self-hate are topics we've written about before. This week, scholar Dr. Yaba Blay wrote: "Nigerian-Cameroonian pop star, Dencia, recently launched her own skin care line - Whitenicious. Within days, it sold out. Yes, this is real life."
Officially the products were created to fight dark spots, acne, hyper pigmentation, dark knuckles and knees. But the marketing campaign undeniably shows women with very light (white?) skin.

I don't even know what to say to this. I couldn't imagine doing this to myself, never seeing my dark brown skin in the sun again. Body alteration is a great form of expression but this seems like something entirely... other... hateful from my American perspective.

The brainwashing is the best thing to mabey describe the whole point.

I do not know many studies about it on other countries, but here in Brazil, whitening isn't discussed openly, because people will say that you're discriminating or the stupid argument that any one can be whatever she ou he wants.

How you can be somehting when you completely unware of what you are?

Horrible how this affects all of us. Not exclusive to any gender, tint, or shade.

It's 2014! Sisters in the diaspora should be able to look to Africa for inspiration not self-degradation...

Aside from these types of products being horrible for your skin, I think it is a crying shame that some women feel a need to resort to use this type of crap.  Women of every race, religion and creed should feel proud to be a woman and not give a rats ass about media, social hype and stereotypes that encourage this kind of racial psychology!
