young afro-feminist animator caress reeve visualizes gender discrimination in short film series

Inspired by black feminist theorist’s like bell hooks, Reeves’ animations explore notions of blackness and femininity in a whimsical and fanciful way that are playful and poignant. Reeves’ series of animated shorts explore the perils of gender discrimination everywhere from online dating to the gaming community, mansplaining to street harassment. Reeves takes these nuanced subjects and presents them for conversation. Watch each of these creative shorts, below!

These five films are part of ‘DIS…MISS’, an on-going multi-media project and public art piece that features the work of 20 L.A. artists and their work about gendered relationships.
