Just happy to spread the nappy hair love - like I said, I am obsessed. I do sometimes go a little quiet but I am here or hereabout. If you are going to use chemical colours as opposed to henna just be sure to give your hair lots of deep conditioning treatments. Herbal Essence is a great day to day product range for curly hair....Enjoy .And post some pics!!!
I became a born ago natural hair zealot about 18 months ago. Although i have worn my hair natural for many years I did a lot of research to try and understand the science better. Amongst many changes I have made, I have adopted a way of washing my hair and my daughter's with conditioner. Its called co-washing. The basic theory is that most shampoos have a product called sodium laurel sulphate that cleanses and creates suds but this product has a drying effect and is much harsher than necessary. Curly hair (not just black folks hair but all curlies) need as much moisture as possible and the sulphates strip the hair, so avoiding it is better for your hair. Sodium laurel sulphate is present in most conditioners in smaller quantities than in shampoos. So you can co-wash with any moisturising conditioner but I have gone a step further and avoid all sulphates, and a whole list of other products but petroleum and mineral oil products are probably curly hair enemy no.2 on my list closely followed by silicone products. If you are interested in reading about products to avoid this is as good a link as any.
Everyone is different and if i have learned anything over the past 18 months its that not all black folks hair is the same and understanding hair type -thickness, porosity, etc is really important in finding the right care routine/products. BUT our hair has never been healthier and we have both experienced much better growth so I think we're on the right track.
