Controversial 'Black Face' Cake In Sweden

Many called for the resignation of Swedish Minister of Culture, Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth, after seeing images of her cutting this cake at World Art Day April 15th 2012 (Moderna Museet Stockholm)...
The piece/performance was created by 'Afro-Swede' artist Makode Linde, who says its goal is actually to criticize 'Black face', and comment on female genital mutilation. 'The vastness of social media encourages misinterpretation', he told Al Jazeera.
What's your take? Shouldn't art be about spurring dialogue like this? Or is it just plain bad taste?

well it comes back to the fact that the minority is still voiceless in this situation. it also shows that there is still a large amount of hostility and envy that still permeates the mind set of whites causing their hatred of black  expression of the female persona. any one wonder why he didnt have the balls to ask a real black woman to take part in his live display. i dont understand how he a black man could put this idea out there in such an ignorant manner.

This is truly disgusting. If it were meant to be a respectful piece exposing the horrors of genital mutilation in the motherland why does it have a face reminiscent of a sambo doll? And why make it a cake so that you are symbolically participating in the cutting? If I were there I would have dumped the cake on the floor!

Oh... those kooky Germans. I agree MAMADOC, for such a serious subject they claim to be bringing to light, I would have preferred for it to be treated with more dignity and respect as a opposed to the "party" atmosphere. "Oh that looks like fun, let me get a piece of that! Yum!"

My 1st reaction is sadness as I see the laughing and cutting of the cake. Then I started to wonder what the reaction would be of a girl or woman who had actually been through genital mutilation. I'm wondering how much dialog it's actually spurring about the subject because it just seems as if those in the room are more intent on cutting themselves a piece of cake and walking away. If I were to relate the display to the mutilation, it would be one of the very few times I'd have to refuse a piece of cake!
