controversial ‘black face’ cake in sweden

April 18, 2012

Many called for the resignation of Swedish Minister of Culture, Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth, after seeing images of her cutting this cake at World Art Day April 15th 2012 (Moderna Museet Stockholm)…
The piece/performance was created by ‘Afro-Swede’ artist Makode Linde, who says its goal is actually to criticize ‘Black face’, and comment on female genital mutilation. ‘The vastness of social media encourages misinterpretation’, he told Al Jazeera.
What’s your take? Shouldn’t art be about spurring dialogue like this? Or is it just plain bad taste?
